The Alphabet

Next Vowels

Now that we've introduced the basics, let's learn the alphabet. Each consonant is listed below, in approximate order of frequency. It is most important to learn the consonants listed first, while the consonants at the end are so rare that you may never even encounter them. I've also listed the initial sound of each consonant, which is the sound it makes when it begins a syllable. From this, you can derive the sound it makes at the end of a syllable, which we'll cover in the next section. The consonant class is also listed, and must be memorized in order to correctly pronounce Thai words -- the importance of consonant class will become apparent when we get to the section concerning tones.
